Wow, è un onore immenso poter intervistare uma grandissima artista di talento, una designer creativa, dolce e appassionata: Dee Hardwicke. Con un portfolio ricco e ampio, si ispira al paesaggio britannico e alla tradizione artigiana, collabora con diverse aziende per creare meravigliose ceramiche, cancelleria, tappeti e piastrelle: la passione per la maglia e il lavoro con i filati si è concretizzato in una serie di libri di maglia…

Quanto sono importanti i tuoi studi nelle Belle Arti per il tuo approccio al lavoro e al processo creativo?

Sono sempre stata creativa, e molti dei miei primi ricordi dell’infanzia riguardano la creazione di vestiti per le mie bambole o il dipingere in giardino. Creare cose è sempre stato un modo di vivere per me. E’ stata una bellissima scoperta studiare le Belle Arti e scoprire di poter avere un percorso professionale come artista e designer. Il piano di studi era molto tradizionale con materie come ritratto, pittura, scultura e anche alcuni aspetti del design. Questo mio percorso di studi è una base importante per tutta la mia carriera perché saper disegnare e abbinare colori e schemi è importante. La mia formazione mi ha insegnato a guardare attentamente al mondo che mi circonda. Per esempio, se guardi veramente una foglia, noterai colori e schemi che non ha mai visto prima. Nel design è veramente importante la disciplina del guardare e il saper interpretare ciò che vedi.

Il tuo album per gli schizzi per te è molto importante…
Ho sempre un album per gli schizzi con me, così da poter segnare e disegnare le cose che mi ispirano nelle diverse stagioni. Riempio le pagine con piccoli acquarelli e fiori pressati, oltre alle altre cose, e così ogni album degli schizzi diventa come un diario. Adoro sfogliarli quanto sono alla ricerca di nuove idee prima di iniziare a lavorare a un progetto.

Che cosa ti ispira e dove trovi ispirazione?

La meraviglia del mondo naturale mi ha sempre ispirata e sono fortunata di vivere e lavorare tra le spettacolari montagne del Galles. I colori e le linee del pedaggio sono in continua mutazione- di stagione in stagione, di anno in anno, e devo solo uscire di casa per essere ispirata. Non c’è giorno uguale all’altro. Oltre all’incredibile campagna, ci sono anche bellissimi giardini con i fiori (e adoro il giardinaggio): per questo motivo spesso i miei designi/modelli sono ispirati dai fiori coltivati come le ortensie e dalie. Mi piace anche vagare per i giardini delle città quando viaggio per lavoro.

Puoi raccontarci qualcosa della tua passione per la maglia e il ricamo? Come crei un modello/schema?

Lavoro a maglia e ricamo da quando sono un’adolescente. Negli anni è diventato naturale trasferire i miei disegni alla maglia e al ricamo, e ho anche iniziato a pensare alla maglia e al cucito come forme di “pittura” con i filati. Ogni punto è come se fosse una pennellata con i colori. Mi sento molto legata con il movimento Art & Crafts e la tradizione del lavorare con un ampio spettro di materiali, dalla carta ai filati all’argilla per interpretare il mondo naturale. Ogni materiale risponde in modo diverso e guida il processo creativo.

Ci puoi descrivere il tuo processo creativo e quanto è importante la creatività nella tua vita?

Sin da quando ero bambina, ho risposto al mondo intorno a me realizzando cose. I miei disegni/modelli nascono nell’album degli schizzi e poi li applico a qualsiasi cosa dalla maglia, alle ceramiche alla cancelleria. Sono molto fortunata che il design e il creare siano un modo di vivere per me, e quindi il lavoro non è mai veramente lavoro. Adoro stare nello studio con una tazza di caffè, del cioccolato e uno o due progetti ispirazionali.

Wow, I’m so honored to be interviewing a great and talented artist, a sweet and passionate creative designer: Dee Hardwicke. With a rich and diverse portfolio inspired by her love for the British Landscape and the artisan tradition, she works with selected companies to design beautiful chinaware, stationary, rugs and flooring; her passion for knitting and working with beautiful yarns has blossomed into a series of knitting books…

You have a background in Fine Arts, do you want to tell us how important this is in your approach to your work and creative process?

I’ve always been very creative, and some of my earliest memories are of making little outfits for my dolls or painting in the garden. Since making things has always been a way of life for me, I didn’t initially consider it as being the basis of a career. It was a wonderful revelation to study fine arts and to discover that I could make a career out of being an artist and designer. The course was very traditional and covered disciplines such as life drawing, as well as painting, sculpture and various aspects of design. It has been a fantastic foundation for my entire career since it really helps to be able to draw and to be able to put colours and patterns together. My training has also taught me the importance of looking closely at the world around me. For example, if you really look at a leaf, you’ll start to see colours and patterns that you won’t have noticed initially. That discipline of looking – and being able to interpret what you see – is so important when it comes to designing.

Your sketchbook is very important to you…
I always have a sketchbook with me so that I can record all of the things which inspire me throughout the seasons. I fill the pages with little watercolours and pressed flowers etc so each sketchbook becomes almost like a journal. I love looking through my sketchbooks for ideas when I’m starting work on a new project.

Where do you find inspiration?

I’ve always been inspired by the beauty of the natural world, and I’m lucky to live and work surrounded by spectacular mountains in Wales. The colours and textures in the landscape are constantly changing – from season to season and from year to year – so I only have to step outside to feel inspired. No two days are ever the same. As well as stunning countryside, there are also beautiful, flower-filled cottage gardens all around me (and I love gardening too) so my designs are often inspired by cultivated flowers such as hydrangeas and dahlias. I also enjoy wandering through city parks when I’m travelling for work.

Can you tell us something about your passion for knitting and embroidery? How is a design created?

I’ve knitted and embroidered ever since I was a teenager. Over the years it has become a logical progression to apply my designs to hand-knits and embroidery, and I’ve come to see knitting and sewing as forms of ‘painting’ in yarn. Each stitch is almost like a brushstroke of colour. I feel a real connection with the Arts & Crafts movement and that tradition of working with a wide range of materials, from paper and yarn to clay, to interpret the natural world. Each material responds in a different way and leads the design process.

Can you describe your creative process and how important creativity is in your life?

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve responded to the world around me by making things. My designs begin in my sketchbooks and I then apply them to everything from knitwear to ceramics and stationery. I’m really lucky that designing and creating are very much a way of life for me, so ‘work’ never really feels like work. I love settling down in my studio with a cup of coffee, a bar of chocolate and an inspiring project or two.
